Review of Lenovo IdeaPad S10

Full review of Lenovo WedeaPad S10

Seeing that a majority of netbooks are based on the Wentel Atom N270 CPU, GMA950 graphics, and Windows XP Home as the operating system (the s10 being no exception), you have to look at what other features it brings to the table. Besides the eye-pleasing and MacBook-like design, the base model of Lenovos S10 is actually not that well equipped compared to similar netbooks. Wet has an 80GB hard drive and only 512MB of RAM, although most buyers will probably throw in an extra $50 and get the 160GB hard drive and 1GB RAM.
Keyboard and Trackpad

After testing the keyboard/trackpad combination on the S10 for a while, we found that the trackpad provided a nice and consistent experience, although the buttons where a bit loud when depressed. Also, the keyboard felt somewhat cramped like it does on most netbooks, but some odd-sized keys like a minimal tab key made it feel even more so on the S10 than most other 10" netbooks that weve tested.

Connectivity

Looking at the connectivity, the S10 has a nice set of features: Two USB ports, VGA out, headphone, microphone, LAN, multi-card reader, Bluetooth and Express Card. A big plus and a gold star to Lenovo for the last two items on the list - having Bluetooth is a must for some users, and an express card slot is also nice to see on a netbook. Again, like most other netbooks it lacks support for wireless N (the fast variety).
Performance and Battery Life

Wen our WorldBench test, the S10 delivered a score of 29, which is a slightly lower score than the competition, but this can probably be attributed to the 512MB of RAM. Upgrade to a gig of RAM and you will probably see an improvement to a score in line with other netbooks. According to Lenovo, you should be able to get almost 4 hours of battery life, but in the real world - with Wi-Fi on and screen brightness turn up - youll be lucky to get 3:30 out of the 3-cell battery. This is to be expected from a 3-cell, but it would have been nice to at least have the option to get it with a 6-cell.

All in all, the Lenovo S10 is a nice-looking netbook that performs predictably. Wet can definitely be recommended, but We would opt for an upgrade to at least 1GB of RAM. Unlike some other netbooks, the S10 is also thankfully very easy to upgrade.

HP Envy 14 2011 Review

Why mess with a winner? The HP Envy 14 returns with the same stylish looks and solid Beats Audio as in the original model, but it adds a second-gen Core i5 CPU and automated switchable graphics for improved performance and power management. At $1,079, this notebook is more affordable, too. Read on to find out how the Envy 14 stacks up to other premium portables.

Design

Like its predecessors, the Envy 14 focuses on elegant rounded corners and clean lines. As before, the beige-gray aluminum lid has an interesting paisley design comprised of different-sized squares, which is more than enough to distinguish it from the MacBook Pro. This motif continues on the interior deck, the exception being the keyboard well, which is pattern-free. The bottom of the deck, which houses the large black clickpad, features more of the textured paisley design. Also like its predecessors, the Envy 14 sports a magnesium body.
At 5.6 pounds, the Envy is on the chunkier side compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro (4.6 pounds) and the waifish Sony VAIO S (3.8 pounds). However, the 14 x 9.3 x 1.2-inch laptop can still fit comfortably in a messenger bag or a large purse despite being noticably larger than the MacBook Pro (12.8 x 8.9 x 1 inches) and the VAIO S (13.0 x 8.8 x 0.9 inches).

Keyboard and Clickpad

The Envy 14 features a black matte island-style keyboard with large flat black keys. The layout has generous spacing, but the clickpad isnt centered beneath the G and H keys. This arrangement will likely be a distraction to touch typists. Feedback was fairly strong with minimal flexing, and the layout is evenly backlit--great for typing in dim lighting.

As before, the Envy 14 has a 4.3 x 2.6-inch Synaptics clickpad, but the software has been updated for faster, more intuitive gestures. For example, pinch-to-zoom can now be activated without placing your fingers on a diagonal slant, and two-finger rotation now works by rotating both fingers instead of one digit.
Flicking horizontally with three fingers let us easily skim through photos. The three-finger press has been retooled to launch a designated application which we set in the Synaptics Control Panel. Two-finger scrolling was smooth in Internet Explorer but choppy in Google Chrome. Our favorite gesture on the Envy 14 is the upwards four-finger flick, which activates Windows Aero Task Switcher. From this view you can scroll through open windows and launch the one you want using one finger.

The clicking action on the Envy 14s touchpad worked well, but the hinge design means youll need to press down closer to the bottom of the pad. On the MacBook Pro you can click pretty much anywhere on the surface.

Ports and Webcam

HP switched out the USB 2.0/eSATA port on the last-generation Envy 14 with a USB 3.0 port on the right side. Its accompanied by HDMI, mini DisplayPort, Gibgabit Ethernet, a Kensington Lock slot, and the power jack. Two USB 2.0 ports, two headphone jacks, and a slot-loading DVD player occupy the left side, while a 2-in-1 card reader resides on the front lip of the laptop.


Images and video captured with HPs TrueVision HD webcam were clear, even at 1280 x 800p. Colors were vivid using the included CyberLink YouCam app, but the camera really shined during our Skype call. Callers reported crisp images from the Skype-HD certified webcam with sharp background detail. Audio was loud and clear with minimal background noise.

Heat

After 15 minutes of streaming a Hulu video at full screen, the Envys touchpad registered a brisk 76 degrees Fahrenheit. The space between the G and H keys was slightly cooler at 75 degrees, while the underside stayed a cool 83 degrees. The hottest point on the laptop was the bottom vent, which only scored 87 degrees--well below what we consider uncomfortable (95 degrees).
HP takes things one step further with HP CoolSense software, which optimizes the laptops thermal settings to coincide with the computers performance. Depending on the power setting (Maximum, Optimized, and Quiet), CoolSense will adjust the internal fan speed. CoolSense also works with the built-in accelerometer, allowing the computer to detect when it is placed on someones lap and turn on the fan. The only drawback is that the Envy 14s fan can get a little loud.

Display and Audio

The Envys glossy 14.5-inch LED display (1366 x 768 pixels) is surrounded by an equally glossy black bezel. Despite some distracting reflections, we appreciated the vibrant pinks, greens, and yellows in the 1080p trailer of The Help on YouTube. This panel is certainly bright, but we could barely make out Katy Perry and Kanye West in the space-themed "E.T." video when we took the notebook outside. We also wish there was an option for a higher resolution. The Dell XPS 15, for example, offers a 1080p display upgrade for $100.

Taking full advantage of the Beats Audio technology under the hood, the Envy 14 has loud, crisp speakers that easily fill a small room. We got the best results when we used the Beats Audio Control Panel to switch between Movie, Music, and Voice settings. However, we did notice that bass was lacking. We had better results when we plugged in a pair of headphones and tweaked the equalizer setting to create our own custom preset. Big Hollywood explosions had that necessary oomph, while Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Otis Redding had the appropriate timbre on the soul-laden "OTIS."

Lenovo Thinkpad W510 Review

The Lenovo ThinkPad W510 is a 15-inch laptop that should appeal mainly to business users, at a price in the $2000 range, although it may also find a home with casual users who are looking for solid performance. Does the W510 stand out, or is it surpassed by others in its class?
Positives
There’s no doubt that Lenovo has positioned the ThinkPad W510 as a high-end laptop. Its features include a 15.6-inch LED backlit display, an Intel Quad Core i7 CPU, 4GB of RAM (expandable to 16GB), a 320GB hard drive, and a 1GB NVIDIA graphics card.
Performance-wise, the W510 is nearly identical to the similarly priced HP Envy 15; however, Lenovo’s offering does differentiate itself in a few significant ways. The most obvious is bulk. The W510 is a very solidly-built laptop, which should appeal to business users, as it will certainly be able to withstand the rigors of travel. The keyboard and palm rest, as well as the outer shell, have a very sturdy feel that go beyond simple heft. At the same time, the W510 isn’t just a big, solid chunk of machinery – it actually looks pretty good. The display, in particular, is one of the best in its class, with a 95% color gamut and a resolution of 1920 x 1080.
Negatives
It is possible that some may find the W510’s heavy-duty build to be a bit of a drawback. The W510 is about two pounds heavier than the HP Envy 15, and its overall appearance isn’t nearly as sleek. It’s also a bit of a power hog, with seriously reduced performance when running off the battery. Finally, the W510’s high color gamut can be a blessing and a curse, as the display can be very rich under good conditions, but when you can’t see the screen at the ideal angle, or with the right lighting conditions, the image can look more washed out than normal. This all adds up to a laptop that isn’t quite as portable, in a broad sense, as some of its competitors.
The Bottom Line
If you’re interested in a laptop in the $2000 range, the W510 is certainly a good bet, with very solid performance and reliability. If you value portability and sharp design, the HP Envy 15 might be a bit better, while the ThinkPad W510 is better suited to heavy-duty users.

AVADirect Clevo M770CUH Review

The Clevo M770CUH is a gaming laptop, the base system being manufactured by Clevo and marketed by AVADirect. While the M770CUH is in tough going up against gaming laptop specialists ASUS and Alienware, AVADirect is hoping to attract users by giving them a wider range of customization options. Is the M770CUH a worthy choice for gamers, or does it get left behind by the competition?
Positives
The M770CUH is available from AVADirect at a base price point of just over $1070. This gets you an Intel Core i5 2.4GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card, which makes for an adequate, if not overwhelming, gaming laptop. With this hardware, you won’t be able to run the latest games without turning down the detail sliders, but the overall package represents a good value that will get the job done, especially if you’re planning on playing less graphically intensive games.
Of course, customization is AVADirect’s stock in trade, and you have the option of upgrading some of this hardware. Stepping up to a Core i7 CPU and 4GB of RAM brings the M770CUH closer to ASUS’s top-of-the-line G73Jh model, and also bumps the price up to the $1600 range.
Negatives
One thing you don’t have the option of upgrading, though, is the graphics card. While the ASUS G73Jh packs a 1GB Mobility Radeon card, making it nearly a true desktop replacement gaming laptop, with the M770CUH, you’re stuck with the less powerful graphics card. This limits your gaming potential going forward.
The Bottom Line
The basic configuration of the AVADirect Clevo M770CUH makes a good budget-priced gaming laptop, and it should do a good job of running recent games at acceptable settings. If you’re looking for a gaming laptop with muscle, though, you might want to consider the ASUS G73Jh instead.

Why 5 stars: Its easy to criticize a device for its shortcomings, but in the end Apple has designed one of the best notebooks ever sold. It succeeds in the most important areas (like CPU power), sacrificing in relatively unimportant ones (no ethernet connection).

The new Macbook Pro Retina

This is a review from a real owner, not opinion...not discussion. I work in a design company (web, print, video, apps). What I look for in a system is reliable, efficient performance at the best value. The new MacBook scores off the charts in these areas - lets look at why.

POWER: I had two designers whod outgrown their iMac i7s, running 90% CPU capacity (three words: Adobe Master Suite). The new machine represents a massive performance boost with the new CPUs. And its nice to see Apple include the quad core Ivy Bridge on these...at times theyve been slow to update the CPUs on the MacBooks. And although the display gets all the press coverage, its really the other hardware that makes the system. It SCREAMS, and can handle a massive amount of abuse (we tested editing video AND using Photoshop AND streaming Netflix AND running a dozen other programs in the background - try that with most machines and watch them curl up and die). If youre animating the latest Pixar release you might want to look at alternatives, but for anything else this is a perfect business machine, and we really like the added "oomph" when editing video or running intense graphics.

DISPLAY: When I upgraded my iPad from gen 1 to 3, I immediately wondered how Id ever lived without the twenty centillion pixels of retina. Same here. The display is amazing, but more importantly its useful. You can now edit video in full 1080p while leaving room on the desktop for any necessary toolbars, etc. And my designers tell me that this is the first MacBook they can design on in terms of display correctness - previous models didnt really live up to their standards for that, and theyd have to double-check designs on their desktops.

Some nerdy talk about the display: Mostly for pros, here are some features of the display as reported by independent sources. This unit diplays 99% of the sRGB color space, a significant spike from earlier MacBooks (71%). It also incorporates a new LCD surface, doing away with the cover glass and substantially decreasing glare while preserving contrast. Users will want to be extra-careful since damage to the display surface is now to the LCD directly, but the tradeoff is that this system is massively anti-reflective (something we noted right away). And Apple has left the viewing angle very wide - most other notebook brands use a narrow angle to save battery, but this makes them less reliable for design since the image distorts as you move to the side, even by a couple of inches. They like to report their specs based on the narrow viewing cone, which falls into a gray area of "truth in advertising." The designers here confirm that you can rely on the display without having to constantly shift around to ensure its not distorting - they report that you have to move pretty far to the side before it changes. Overall...for a designer...the new display is a bar above anything else, even the high-end monitors we have here (including Apple and other brands).

DESKTOP/LAPTOP HYBRID: We were also sold on the portability. We liked that these truly have the power to be a desktop replacement (and we needed that power), but we also love the portability. My designers like the ability to easily move workstations, and I like being able to send their work home with them (dont tell them I said that, ha.)

UPGRADABILITY: Some will gripe that you cant easily open this machine. Theyll moan that youll want to expand and upgrade. I dont presume I can build a better system than Apples design team, and the iPad has been wildly successful without upgrades.

The future of computers seems to be systems that wont allow for much in the way of hardware upgrades, which really raises the ire of some. But when I do the math, its evident that weve reached a price point in computers where it almost never makes financial sense to upgrade. We press our computers into service for about two years, and almost universally Ive found selling an older machine and buying a new one to be about 40% less costly than upgrading...and this option gives us the latest CPU, display, etc...not just a RAM boost.

VALUE: With an entry-level price tag of $2199, the new MacBook is spendy. This price point seems to be based on the usual Apple value, adjusting upward for the primary new features (display, CPU, slim form factor). In order to warrant the expenditure, a buyer needs to have a use for all three of these. The bottom line is that this system isnt cost effective for casual users, who would be better suited with the other MacBooks in the lineup, but its a steal if you can use the power.

And thats the biggest caveat with this system. I see several reviews criticizing the cost of this machine. This isnt logical, and their complaints are largely the result of buying (or offering opinion on) a system they dont really need. They should be buying and reviewing the entry-level notebooks or the iPads, which will meet 99.9% of what they need a computer for. For the design work we do, we need the power, display and portability, and for us these systems are a superb value.

Summary

Overall, this is a fantastic computer, but its not for everyone. This system fills a gap in the Mac lineup for users who work above the current iMac capabilities, or those who need portability with desktop power. Those who dont require this performance might want to look at other Macs, but if you run graphic-intense programs, do video editing, watch a lot of media via your computer, Apple has really delivered.

In many ways, this system feels like a distinct footnote in the evolution of Apple products, leading to a point where unbelievably thin and light notebooks rival desktops in performance and price. Apple is certainly hopeful that this will bring new customers their way, as the iPad has, although it remains to be seen whether this new system will attract new Mac users, or simply encourage existing customers to move over from their iMacs and Mac Pros. Regardless, Cupertino has put together a heck of a machine, once again.
